I’ve already posted Giovanni’s album Works, and I recently decided that Aquilarco is too good not to post.  Giovanni’s music classifies under what critic Kyle Gann has called the “Post-Minimal” genre of music.  Aquilarco is, in short, better than “Works”.  This is a great album to just lie back and listen to while you relax.  Just sit back and let the music suck you in.

“Insanity” is the first word that pops in my head when I listen to w<-1 because everything about the project is literally insane. I don’t mean insane like, “Dude I can’t believe you chugged that soda, that was insane”, I mean peoples’ faces being slowly ripped to pieces by a claw machine insane; this album really should come with a “warning” label. Essentially, w<-1 is different samples from music, videos, movies, etc. mixed with music and noise made by them. Some parts are laugh out loud funny with sample vs. music/noise choice, other parts are legitimately frightening. The thing about each song though is that it’s not pure noise, it’s structured and put together well. The samples flow really nicely and do not overstay their welcome. It’s also obvious the creators enjoyed making this album, and I enjoy listening to it. Hopefully you will too.

Tiny Tim is one of my favorite artists of the 60’s.  His distinct falsetto and style is just too fun not to enjoy.  So naturally, when I saw that he had a Christmas album, I new I’d be adding it to our Holiday special.  And if you like this, make sure you give some of his other works a try.

This guy can play cello like no one I’ve ever heard of.  Chances are, you might not have heard of him, but you have seen the youtube video with him magically sprouting the extra arms and playing all the parts to one of his original compositions “Terra Aria”.  As far as modern classical goes, I’d say that this is where it peaks.  And it is very good.  And make sure that if you download, you pay special attention to the song “Hell VI – Conte Ugolino” in which a man reads part of the divine comedy out loud and in a very angry manner whilst Giovanni plays his music in the background.  The first time I heard it, I eargasmed.

“Here’s some new boy ecstacy pop. Taking a break from old hat, Tonstartssbandht pass the time with some pop loop experiments. This tape’s about freeing dæmons, connecting with everything, bumping the ganz toll, doubling your self and predicting the weather. The Colors represent the sweet spot, and you know you can make it happen so that’s pride!” -Dœs Are

This particular album takes chant-like vocals and loops them over each other. Recommended for fans of The Residents. Check out some other stuff of theirs on Myspace because it’s a lot more pop-y and less strange.

This dude does just as the title suggests, tries to play Philip Glass stuff on the accordion. Some of it works flawlessly while portions can sound sloppy. Still a neat little treat.
